Shake and Fold

After conducting a detailed research on segmentation of waste of Koç University, we found out that a major component was drying towels, that can only be used for once and cannot be recycled. In order to reduce the amount of this non-recyclable waste, we wanted to show people that they can dry their hands more successfully with less material. After experimenting with different methods, we concluded on one method which turns out to be the most successful.

In this methods, consumers are asked to shake their hands hard for 12 times and fold the towel in half before drying their hands. To visualize our campaign we created a sticker and stuck it on each towel machine. With this stickers, consumers are always reminded of the method just before their consumption of the towels.

To track the success of the campaign, we compared a number of paper towels bought in August, September, October both in one year before the campaign (2015) and 2016. The reports showed us that in 2015, there was a monthly consumption of 321 kg of paper towels in declared months, while the amount decreased significantly to 231 kg in 2016. In other words, a total of 28% of the decrease in usage of paper towels is achieved while the number of students increased from 2015 to 2016. This campaign is a good example that how small notices just before the action can affect human action to save the world.
